Bangladesh's political crisis deepened on Tuesday as President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved Parliament and appointed Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus to lead an interim government. This came a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country amid violent protests.
The President's move followed consultations with military chiefs and leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which had spearheaded the protests. Yunus, who is abroad, has accepted the role, calling the development the country's 'second liberation.'
Amidst the turmoil, the country witnessed significant violence with the death toll reaching 440. The dissolution of Parliament clears the way for new elections, setting the stage for Yunus' return to lead the interim government. Political, civil, and military leaders are now finalizing the interim government's composition, as calm begins to return to Dhaka.
