Leaders of the INDIA bloc are expected to convene a crucial meeting in the national capital this week, sources indicated on Tuesday.
This would mark the second significant assembly of the opposition front since the Lok Sabha polls results were declared on June 4. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will join the forthcoming discussions, a source confirmed.
Although the meeting date remains unconfirmed, several prominent opposition figures are in Delhi for the ongoing Parliament session. Uddhav Thackeray of Shiv Sena (UBT) arrived on Tuesday and is set to engage with key opposition leaders. With Maharashtra and Haryana heading to the polls in a few months, the opposition aims to leverage its recent Lok Sabha success in these states. The INDIA bloc, boasting 234 MPs in the Lok Sabha against the National Democratic Alliance's 293, has been exhibiting solidarity against the government in Parliament. On Tuesday, INDIA bloc MPs staged a protest at Parliament's gate, demanding the withdrawal of 18 per cent GST on life and health insurance premiums. They also united in protest on the inaugural day of the 18th Lok Sabha session, wielding copies of the Constitution. A united opposition spurred an election for the Lok Sabha Speaker's post, with Congress' K Suresh contesting Om Birla. Although Birla triumphed through a voice vote, the opposition refrained from requesting a ballot count.
