Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has reportedly resigned and left the country amidst massive protests against her government, according to several news reports. The protests have resulted in more than 106 deaths over the past two days.
However, there has been no official confirmation regarding her resignation or her departure from Dhaka. BBC reported that Hasina left for Agartala in Tripura via helicopter. The Associated Press confirmed her resignation but did not provide additional details, while Tripura officials denied having any information about her departure.
In the face of a fluid and uncertain situation, the Bangladeshi army chief is expected to address the nation later on Monday. Meanwhile, private Jamuna television reported that Hasina was forced to resign due to widespread protests over a controversial quota system that reserved 30% of government jobs for relatives of veterans from the 1971 War of Independence. Hours later, hundreds of protesters stormed her official residence.
