The Congress party on Monday demanded that elections in Jammu and Kashmir adhere strictly to the Supreme Court-set deadline. Party chief Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the BJP's policies neither respect 'Kashmiriyat' nor uphold 'Jamhuriyat' (democracy).

Kharge's remarks coincided with the fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: J&K and Ladakh.

'The BJP's policy on Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh shows no regard for 'Kashmiriyat' and fails to uphold 'Jamhuriyat (democracy),' Kharge said in a social media post. 'The Modi government claimed that this move would fully integrate Jammu and Kashmir, boost economic development, and prevent terrorism and separatism. However, the reality is starkly different,' he added.
