Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has stepped down as the president of the West Bengal Congress Committee following the recent Lok Sabha elections, confirmed AICC general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir on Tuesday.

The announcement came after a meeting between Congress General Secretary K C Venugopal and senior West Bengal Congress leaders, including Chowdhury, to discuss various issues, such as their relationship with the state's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC).

'Discussions took place with senior leaders, and since Chowdhury was present, I informed everyone that he had tendered his resignation after the elections. We sought their views on the party's strategy for the 2026 assembly polls,' said Mir. He added that the process to name a new PCC chief is ongoing and will be completed soon.

The Congress is also gathering feedback on maintaining a balance in its ties with TMC both nationally and within the state. Notably, Chowdhury and the state Congress leadership have occasionally diverged from the central stance, such as when the state unit condemned the 'anarchic condition' in West Bengal while the central leadership expressed solidarity with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.
