Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr highlighted the necessity for continuous engagements with U.S. officials to ensure swift actions against maritime disputes with China. He addressed concerns during a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin on Tuesday, stressing the strategic importance of their alliance.

The Philippines, a U.S. treaty ally, has had numerous confrontations at sea with China within the last year. However, the two nations have agreed on a provisional arrangement to reduce tensions and manage their maritime differences more effectively. The historic discussions took place at Malacanang Palace, marking the first such high-level meetings hosted by the Philippines.

President Marcos expressed satisfaction with the open communication channels, noting their vital role in addressing issues around the West Philippine Sea and the Indo-Pacific region. He also commented on the evolving U.S. political landscape, hinting at the recent developments in President Biden's re-election campaign, and welcomed greetings from Vice President Harris and President Biden, as relayed by Secretary Blinken.
