Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez landed in Spain on Sunday to seek asylum, hours after leaving his country due to a political and diplomatic crisis stemming from July's contentious election, Madrid officials announced.

Gonzalez, who has contested President Nicolas Maduro's claim of victory, arrived at the Torrejon de Ardoz military base with his wife, according to Spain's foreign ministry. The 75-year-old—viewed by numerous international powers as the election's rightful winner—left Venezuela a week after authorities issued an arrest warrant accusing him of conspiracy.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell commented on the situation, expressing sorrow for Venezuelan democracy and stating that a true democracy would not force political leaders into asylum. Meanwhile, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez said Gonzalez was given safe passage to restore political peace. Despite this, no official negotiations with Maduro's government were reported by Spain. Opponents continue to assert that Gonzalez won the election, providing tallies they claim prove his victory.
