Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday congratulated Nicolas Maduro on winning the disputed Venezuelan election, as the Kremlin announced plans to deepen cooperation with Caracas across various sectors, including sensitive areas.

Maduro and opposition rival Edmundo Gonzalez both claimed victory, while Washington and other foreign governments expressed doubts over the official results that gave Maduro 51% of the vote for a third term. This would extend a quarter-century of socialist rule in Venezuela.

Putin expressed confidence in Maduro's leadership and reaffirmed Russia's strategic partnership with Venezuela. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised concerns about the electoral authority's impartiality. Despite Western criticism, Russia views Venezuela as a key partner and plans to continue and enhance their cooperation in oil, defense, and other areas.
