Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday refuted claims by Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi regarding an 'undeclared emergency' and the jailing of MP Amritpal Singh. Puri asserted that Channi lacks understanding of the historical Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, by the then Congress government, which he accused of 'murdering the Constitution.'

Puri highlighted that during discussions on the Union Budget and Jammu & Kashmir Budget, some MPs tried to connect present issues to historical events, including the specter of Bhindranwale. He noted, 'A lot of statements were made, but FM and others have highlighted what has been done for other states. New MPs are enthusiastic, and I think Channi should be more thoughtful in his speeches.'

Congress MP Channi caused a stir in Parliament by alleging a contemporary 'undeclared emergency' under the BJP-led government, claiming that Waris Punjab De chief and MP Amritpal Singh's free speech is being suppressed by the National Security Act. He further accused BJP of financial mismanagement, injustice for Sidhu Moose Wala's family, misuse of central agencies against opposition leaders, and ignoring social unrest in states like Manipur.
