The Congress on Thursday clarified that the recent comments made by its MP Charanjit Singh Channi regarding Amritpal Singh represent his personal views and not those of the party.

The party's reaction came in response to Channi's remarks that the detention of an elected MP under the NSA amounted to an 'undeclared emergency' by the central government. This statement drew a sharp response from the BJP.

Channi's references prompted BJP leaders to point out that he was alluding to radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh. Despite the controversy, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh reiterated that Channi's perspectives are solely his own.
