Australia's Defence Minister Richard Marles said on Wednesday that Canberra is confident a re-elected Donald Trump will back the AUKUS security alliance and associated nuclear submarine sales after talks with his camp.

The potential victory of Trump in the upcoming November presidential election has U.S. allies globally preparing for his diplomatic strategies, including his stance on the A$368 billion ($243 billion) AUKUS deal designed to help Australia obtain nuclear-powered submarines to counter China in the Pacific region. The agreement includes selling three to five U.S. nuclear-powered Virginia Class submarines in the 2030s, at a time when the U.S. fleet will decrease to a historic low. Some express concerns that Trump's 'America First' policy might align with Congressional voices wanting these submarines reserved for the U.S. Navy.

However, discussions with the Trump camp have reassured Australia that he would honor the deal if he assumes the presidency again, Marles mentioned during an interview on Sky News. 'Every engagement we've had with the Trump camp through the usual processes of speaking with political figures in America indicates there is support for the AUKUS developments,' he said.

'We feel confident, regardless of November's outcome, that the alliance will remain steadfast and the strategic interests, primarily the AUKUS, will be upheld,' Marles added, referencing the AUKUS legislation passed last December, which garnered backing from Republicans, including those linked to Trump.
