Gujarat's Hydropower Generation Sees Record Surge in August 2024

In August 2024, Gujarat's hydropower plants generated 1,067.3 million units of electricity, greatly surpassing the previous month's 308.7 MU. This growth, propelled by heavy monsoon rains, highlights the effectiveness of the state's renewable energy initiative under Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and former CM Narendra Modi's foresight.

Gujarat's hydropower plants achieved a remarkable milestone in August 2024 by generating 1,067.3 million units (MU) of electricity. This is a significant leap from the 308.7 MU recorded in July 2024, largely attributed to dams reaching full capacity due to abundant monsoon water inflows.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam played a pivotal role by contributing over 800 MU of electricity. From the Sardar Sarovar River Bed Power House (RBPH) and Canal Head Power House (CHPH) alone, the total generation was 891 MU. The detailed figures for August 2024 show that Ukai Dam generated 143.1 MU, while Kadana Dam produced 30.9 MU. Notably, the Sardar Sarovar RBPH and CHPH contributed 757.1 MU and 134.3 MU, respectively.

Gujarat has demonstrated consistent growth in hydropower generation over the years. From 2019 to 2024, major dams like Ukai, Kadana, Panam, and Sardar Sarovar have averaged an annual generation of 4,600 MU. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel's leadership aims to contribute to India's goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, focusing on boosting the renewable energy share to at least 50% of the total installed capacity.

Several projects, including solar rooftops, hydroelectric power plants, and large renewable energy parks, are actively enhancing Gujarat's renewable energy production. Heavy monsoon rains have accelerated these efforts, leading to record-breaking power generation from major dams. The year 2022-23 witnessed a peak generation of 6,170.456 MU of hydropower, reflecting a 134% increase from the previous year. For the fiscal year 2023-24, the state's total hydropower generation was 4,584.932 MU.

This success can be attributed to the foresight of former Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who positioned Gujarat as a renewable energy leader by creating India's first Climate Change Department. Under his tenure, sustainable measures were implemented, advancing towards energy transition and net-zero goals. Gujarat continues to make significant strides in its renewable energy sector, aiding India's clean energy ambitions.
