The Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has launched an investigation into the Secret Service's planning of the weekend rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, which faced a shocking assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump.

Security measures at the rally have come under intense scrutiny after Trump was shot on Saturday. The FBI is treating the incident as an assassination attempt. Questions are being raised about how the suspect could gain access to a rooftop with a clear line of sight to Trump.

Despite the incident, Trump appeared at the Republican National Convention, although the attack left him with a bloodied face after his right ear was hit. A rally attendee was killed, two others were wounded, and the assailant was killed.

The investigation will focus on the Secret Service's security protocols for Trump's July 13, 2024, campaign event. President Joe Biden has ordered an independent review, and Republican lawmakers have vowed swift investigations. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle condemned the shooting as unacceptable but has refused to resign.
