In a significant legal development, an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan indicted Shah Mahmood Qureshi, a prominent PTI leader and former foreign minister, on Monday. Qureshi, 68, has been charged in connection with the arson of a police station during the May 9 violence last year.
The court's decision comes amid heightened security measures as Qureshi was transferred from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore for the proceedings. He faces multiple charges of arson linked to the violence at Shadman police station, as reported by Geo News.
This indictment coincides with the Pakistan government's announcement to ban the PTI for allegedly engaging in anti-state activities. The May 9 riots erupted nationwide following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan in a corruption case. In Lahore alone, several cases have been lodged against Qureshi, who has been in prison since being sentenced for violating the Official Secrets Act.
