The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu's police chief and the Tirunelveli district collector following reports of a retired sub-inspector's murder in broad daylight. The murder investigation is marred by allegations of police negligence and involves a potential human rights violation.
The NHRC's notice follows a media report indicating that the victim, an activist against Waqf land encroachment, received threats and alleged that local police were colluding with the perpetrators. The family of the deceased claimed that police inaction contributed to the murder, prompting the NHRC to seek a detailed report within four weeks.
In another case, the NHRC has also demanded a report on the assault of a Scheduled Caste student in Thoothukudi. The student was attacked and seriously injured by upper-caste peers en route to an exam. The NHRC's actions underline its commitment to addressing human rights violations in the region.
