Tribal communities across India are witnessing a positive shift in living standards, a government report revealed. Key improvements noted include rising gross enrolment ratio, enhanced health metrics, and a boost in per capita consumption expenditure.
Union Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Durgadas Uikey, acknowledged ongoing gaps in human development indicators such as education and income levels but emphasized the improved comparative position of Scheduled Tribes over time. According to data presented in the Lok Sabha, the gross enrolment ratio for tribal students at various education levels has fluctuated but generally shows an upward trend over the years.
The National Family Health Survey data also indicated a marked decrease in the infant mortality rate among Scheduled Tribes, suggesting better healthcare access and quality. However, elementary education enrolment remains an area of concern. While per capita consumption expenditure for both rural and urban tribal populations has increased significantly, efforts to reduce disparities with other social groups continue.
