Eskom Celebrates Over Nine Months Without Load Shedding Amid Improved Operational Efficiency

Eskom, South Africa’s primary energy utility, has achieved a milestone by operating for over nine months without implementing load shedding, a significant turnaround from the energy challenges that previously plagued the nation.

“As of Friday, Eskom has successfully completed over 275 consecutive days without implementing load shedding since 26 March 2024,” the utility announced. This marks a substantial step forward in its commitment to reliable electricity supply, bolstered by its Generation Recovery Plan and enhanced maintenance protocols.

Improved Operational Efficiency

Eskom credits its success to the Generation Recovery Plan, which has notably reduced unplanned outages by approximately 8.1% compared to the same period last year. The proactive approach includes the use of the December summer break to ramp up planned maintenance activities. With many industries temporarily shut down, maintenance is averaging a significant 8,000 MW.

Additionally, the utility has achieved remarkable savings in diesel consumption. Year-on-year savings of R16.20 billion represent a 65.1% reduction compared to the R24.89 billion spent during the same period last year. Diesel usage has remained consistently below budgeted projections, reflecting the utility's improved efficiency and cost management.
