A case has been registered by police after a businessman from Pune accused a Navi Mumbai resident of defrauding him of over Rs 1.2 crore in a fake land deal, an official confirmed on Thursday.

The complaint, filed by the 54-year-old businessman, claims that Pravin Tulsiram Sankpale from Vashi promised a plot at Talegaon, MIDC Phase II, Pune district under a 95-year lease agreement.

Sankpale allegedly extracted Rs 1.55 crore from May to July 2023, but failed to deliver the plot. Despite returning Rs 35 lakh, the suspect has not accounted for the remaining funds or land. Consequently, Sankpale has been charged with cheating, and an investigation is progressing, according to inspector JJ Sayyed of the Economic Offences Wing of Thane police.
