The Bombay High Court has temporarily suspended the life sentence of notorious gangster Chhota Rajan, related to the 2001 murder of hotelier Jaya Shetty, and granted him bail. The court's division bench, comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan, mandated Rajan to furnish a one lakh rupee bond for the bail.

Despite this development, Rajan will not be walking free as he is still imprisoned for other criminal activities. Earlier, in May, he was sentenced to life in prison by a special court for his involvement in Shetty's murder. Rajan has challenged this conviction, seeking suspension of his sentence and interim bail.

Jaya Shetty, proprietor of the Golden Crown hotel in Mumbai, suffered a fatal shooting on May 4, 2001. Investigations suggest he was targeted by Rajan's gang due to his inability to pay extortion money demanded by gang member Hemant Pujari. Rajan, already serving a life term for the murder of journalist J Dey, is currently held at Tihar jail in Delhi.
