A Static Surveillance Team seized Rs 22.9 lakh in cash from a trader in Pune's Hadapsar area on Tuesday, confirmed a police officer. The significant seizure points to the heightened vigilance ahead of the Maharashtra assembly polls on November 20.
Authorities intercepted the trader's car during a 'nakabandi' or vehicle check at Manjaru Phata on Solapur Road. The interception happened under the model code of conduct enforced before the elections.
The trader, Baktumal Sukheja, claimed he was heading to deposit the money in a bank at APMC Market Yard. Notified authorities include the Income Tax and Sales Tax departments, informed the officer.
