Two associations representing university professors have denounced the recent arrests of nine students in Kolkata, who were demonstrating near a Durga Puja pandal. These students were advocating for justice following the rape and murder of a doctor from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA) and the All Bengal University Teachers' Association (ABUTA) delivered separate statements calling for public support for the detained students, as well as for the junior doctors who are on a hunger strike in protest against systemic flaws in the healthcare sector.

The students, predominantly from Jadavpur University, were taken into custody while distributing leaflets and chanting slogans. A court has subsequently placed them in police custody, with authorities alleging they have ties to a pro-Naxal group.
