An auction for the post of Sarpanch in Gurdaspur’s Hardowal Kalan village has raised significant controversy, as one of the bidders offered Rs 2 crore for the position.

This practice, widely regarded as a breach of democratic norms, has faced strong condemnation from various political figures. Notably, Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa labeled it as 'open corruption' and called for legal action against those involved.

The auction, participated in by local BJP leader Atma Singh, saw bids starting from Rs 50 lakh and climaxing at Rs 2 crore. Singh, who made his bid through a cheque, claimed that the villagers decided to elect a Sarpanch who would offer maximum funds for the village’s development. The allocation of the auction funds will be managed by a committee of villagers. Similar auctions were reported in Bathinda's Gehri Buttar village but without a conclusive outcome.

Politicians and citizens are alarmed by this unprecedented move, asserting that it undermines the very foundation of democratic elections. Elections for 13,237 Sarpanch and 83,437 Panch positions will occur on October 15, with the results being declared on the same day.
