The Supreme Court has granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case lodged by the CBI concerning an alleged excise policy scam. The apex court deemed prolonged incarceration an 'unjust deprivation of liberty'.
Justice Surya Kant noted that Kejriwal's arrest followed proper procedure, but prolonged detention would infringe on his right to liberty. The court found no valid reason to suspect he would flee the country, given his societal position.
The court imposed conditions on Kejriwal, including a ban on public commentary on the case and mandatory attendance at all trial hearings. Justice Ujjal Bhuyan criticized the CBI for a belated and unjustifiable arrest, adding that the agency must dispel any notions of bias.
