A railway contract labourer, Prashant Kumar, aged 34, was fatally beaten by fellow passengers on the Humsafar Express train between Lucknow and Kanpur after allegedly sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, police reported on Friday.

Kumar, a native of Bihar, was apprehended by the girl's family and other passengers after the incident. According to Additional DG (Railway) Prakash D, Kumar had boarded the train from Siwan and offered his berth to the young girl, which led to the alleged assault while her mother was away.

The girl's mother alerted other passengers, who then brutally thrashed Kumar. He was taken into custody at Kanpur Central station and later transported to KPM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An FIR has been filed against Kumar under applicable sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act, and the case has been transferred to GRP Lucknow for further investigation.
