The Manipur government has lifted its temporary ban on broadband services, officials announced Friday. This decision comes three days after an internet shutdown was imposed in five valley districts.
According to a notification from Commissioner (Home) N. Ashok Kumar, the government's decision permits conditional resumption of broadband services. The terms state that static IP connections are mandatory, with no other connections allowed for now. Additionally, subscribers must prevent wifi/hotspot usage and enforce local blocking of social media and VPNs.
Despite the broadband relaxation, mobile internet data remains suspended due to fears of disinformation spread, which could incite violence. The original shutdown, from September 10 to September 15, came in response to protests over the alleged failures of the DGP and security advisor, which led to injuries among students and police. Meanwhile, security forces have reported the recovery of weapons including a country-made rocket and mortars during operations in the Churachandpur district.
