A 22-year-old man, allegedly tortured after being found with his girlfriend in South Tripura, died while receiving treatment at GBP Hospital in Agartala, police reported on Thursday.
The police registered a case of unnatural death and conducted a post-mortem examination in the presence of an executive magistrate.
Debanjali Roy, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Amarpur in Gomati district, told PTI that a joint police team had found the youth and the girl on September 9 in Harina, South Tripura. The girl was returned to her parents the next day while the youth was handed over to his relatives, with no case filed as the girl's family did not wish to pursue legal action.
However, the youth's death on Wednesday has incensed villagers. When his body arrived at his native village of Chelagang in Amarpur, locals alleged severe beating led to his death.
DYFI Tripura unit secretary Nabarun Deb alleged that the youth was beaten when his family was summoned for settlement at the house of a local BJP leader. The youth's mother and brother claimed he was tortured, resulting in his death. The police are awaiting post-mortem results to determine the exact cause.
