The government is considering a shift in its vehicle scrappage policy to focus on pollution levels instead of the age of automobiles, an official announced on Tuesday.
During the annual convention of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Ministry of Road Transport & Highways Secretary Anurag Jain called upon the automobile industry to help design a reliable pollution check system.
Jain emphasized that a policy mandating scrapping vehicles after 15 years is currently under review. Instead, the government aims to consider pollution levels only. The call for a trustworthy certificate system was reiterated, commending the industry's existing support through discounts on new vehicles for scrapped ones.
