On Tuesday, police detained 50 individuals from Paltan Bazar during a verification drive initiated after tensions flared between traders from two communities. The unrest followed an alleged molestation incident at a footwear shop.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh stated that the drive aims to verify the identities of those who come from other states to work or set up stalls in Paltan Bazar. Following the drive, all 50 detainees were taken to the police lines.
The controversy began when a girl reported being molested at a footwear shop on September 7. The employee, named Umer, was arrested and charged under section 74/75 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. Community tensions escalated, leading to shop closures and a heavy police presence to maintain order. Local authorities are now working to defuse the situation and ensure ongoing cooperation.
