China Seeks Dialogue with EU Amid Electric Vehicle Tariff Dispute

China has reissued a proposal for discussions with the European Commission to tackle economic and trade disputes, aiming to mitigate impending tariffs on China-manufactured electric vehicles.

During talks with the European Commission's trade director general on Monday, Vice Commerce Minister Li Fei stated that China is open to dialogue and consultations, according to a ministry statement. This meeting occurred a day before Reuters noted that the EU might reduce its proposed final tariffs on Tesla, with slight rate reductions for other Chinese EVs.

The ministry underscored the complexity of addressing countervailing subsidies for Chinese electric vehicles, presenting substantial hurdles to an agreement. "China is prepared to continue working closely with the European side to find a solution that aligns with both parties' interests and WTO regulations to foster the healthy and stable development of China-EU economic and trade relations," the ministry's statement read.

China's renewed efforts to negotiate come as it aims to remove proposed duties on its electric vehicles. Recently, China showed a willingness to ease tensions by opting not to impose provisional anti-dumping measures on EU brandy.
