Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced the move on Monday, indicating that the checks would extend to borders with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark starting September 16.

This measure expands existing restrictions with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland.

Faeser highlighted that stronger national border controls are needed until the EU's external borders are more secure under the new Common European Asylum System.

Germany has faced over 30,000 border-crossing rejections since last October, aiming to curb irregular migration and counter threats from Islamist terrorism and serious crime.

Recently, Germany has seen a deadly knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker and a fatal shootout near the Israeli Consulate in Munich.

Political pressure mounts as Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government responds to these incidents, with the far-right Alternative for Germany party gaining traction and securing electoral victories.
