West Bengal Governor C V Ananda Bose has referred the anti-rape Bill passed by the state assembly to President Droupadi Murmu for her consideration, according to a Raj Bhavan official.
The Bill, formally known as the 'Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024', aims to impose capital punishment for rape convicts resulting in death or vegetative states of victims, and life sentences for other perpetrators. Bose's decision came after he received the mandatory technical report from the state government.
Governor Bose had previously criticised the Mamata Banerjee administration for not providing the necessary technical report accompanying the Bill. He has also pointed out procedural lapses and emphasized the need for the administration to seek justice within the current legal framework for the recent tragic incident involving a young doctor. The Raj Bhavan expressed dissatisfaction over the assembly's failure to supply the required text of debates and translations.
