The Supreme Court on Friday stayed the criminal proceedings against Sister Mercy, a nun and teacher, accused of abetment of suicide of a 12-year-old school girl in Chhattisgarh.

A bench of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and P K Mishra was hearing Sister Mercy's appeal against the Chhattisgarh High Court's order, which had dismissed her plea for quashing the chargesheet.

The state police alleged that Sister Mercy instigated the student to commit suicide on February 2. However, her appeal argued that disciplinary measures should not be construed as abetment unless there were specific allegations of deliberate harassment. The Supreme Court has issued a notice to the state police and stayed the proceedings.
