The family of a doctor, who was tragically raped and murdered last month in Kolkata, joined protests held by medical professionals at RG Kar hospital. They accused the Kolkata Police of attempting to suppress the case by hurriedly cremating the doctor’s body.

The grieving parents participated in protests at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where their daughter’s body was found on August 9. They alleged that a senior police officer tried to bribe them to keep quiet after the incident was revealed.

“From the start, the police attempted to hush up the case. We were prevented from viewing our daughter’s body and detained at the police station during the post-mortem. When the body was returned to us, an officer offered us money, which we refused,” the deceased doctor’s father stated.

The trainee doctor’s parents joined the ongoing protests on Wednesday night to support junior doctors demanding justice. The incident incited protests across West Bengal, with various sectors calling for justice.

In response, the Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer for his alleged involvement in the crime. The Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the CBI in mid-August and later moved an investigation into financial irregularities at the hospital from a state Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the central agency. On Monday, the CBI arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, over alleged financial misconduct.
