The Punjab government has informed the Supreme Court of ongoing negotiations involving farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on an indefinite fast for over a month. Dallewal has agreed to accept medical aid if the Centre initiates talks, a proposal he extended and which has now been accepted.
The Supreme Court, reviewing a plea from the Punjab government for additional time, acknowledged the development. A vacation bench led by Justices Surya Kant and Sudhanshu Dhulia refrained from commenting on the negotiations and agreed to the extension request under the circumstances.
The state's advocate general, Gurminder Singh, emphasized that continued efforts towards a resolution are hindered by a Punjab bandh called by other farmer organizations. The matter has been rescheduled for January 2, 2025, with ongoing virtual appearances required from Punjab's chief secretary and the director general of police.
