Family members of a doctor, who was allegedly raped and murdered last month, joined protesting medics at RG Kar hospital on Wednesday, accusing Kolkata Police of attempting to suppress the case by hurriedly cremating her body.

Protesting at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where their daughter's body was recovered on August 9, the parents demanded justice and accused a senior police officer of trying to bribe them after the incident became public.

The father of the deceased doctor claimed, "The police, from the beginning, tried to hush up the case. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while it was taken for post-mortem. Later, a senior police official offered us money, which we immediately declined."

The Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to take over the case in mid-August. The parents joined the protest to support junior doctors seeking justice for their daughter.

Protests have erupted across the state since August 10, with people from various sectors demanding justice for the victim. On Monday, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, for alleged financial misconduct.

On Tuesday, the West Bengal Assembly passed a state anti-rape bill unanimously, seeking capital punishment for rape convicts if their actions result in death or leave the victim in a vegetative state, and a life sentence without parole for other perpetrators.
