Syrian Doctor Faces Rising Racism Amid Far-Right Surge in Thuringia

Syrian doctor Humam Razok, who fled Damascus nine years ago, felt initial relief upon arriving in Germany. However, the recent election victory of the far-right AfD party in Thuringia, coupled with daily racism, has convinced him to leave the state after his wife graduates.

Despite the unlikelihood of the AfD forming a government, Razok, 39, fears increasing racism in Thuringia. The AfD garnered nearly 33% of votes in Thuringia, marking the first far-right party victory in a German state legislature since World War Two. Razok, who quickly learned German and works as an anaesthetist, says his wife faces daily racism, partly because she wears a headscarf.

Migrants in Thuringia have expressed anxiety over the AfD's rise, with many considering leaving the state. Skilled workers are urgently needed in Thuringia, where a significant percentage of healthcare vacancies remain unfilled. This trend, if continued, could aggravate the labour shortage.
