In a significant legal development, five individuals including Abbas Ansari, an MLA and son of Mukhtar Ansari, have been booked under the stringent Gangsters Act, police confirmed on Wednesday.

Alongside Ansari, the FIR lists his driver Niaz Ansari, jail canteen manager Navneet Sachan, Varanasi accountant Shahbaz Alam Khan, and local SP leader Faraz Khan. The FIR was lodged at Karvi Police Station, Chitrakoot Superintendent of Police (SP) Arun Kumar Singh informed PTI.

The charges stem from allegations of operating an extortion racket and intimidating people while Ansari was imprisoned in Chitrakoot's Ragauli jail. Currently, Ansari is in Kasganj jail, with the other four accused out on bail. Previously, they were incarcerated for facilitating unauthorized meetings between Ansari and his wife Nikhat Ansari during his jail tenure. Notably, Ansari had secured the Mau seat in the 2022 UP assembly elections under the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party, which was then part of the Samajwadi Party but is now allied with the NDA ruling at the Centre.
