A deadly incident unfolded in the English Channel on Tuesday when a migrant boat ripped apart, plunging dozens into the dangerous waters and resulting in 12 fatalities. Local authorities confirmed that most victims were women, with some under 18, and many lacked life preservers.
Olivier Barbarin, mayor of Le Portel near Boulogne-sur-Mer, reported the boat's hull ripped open, causing the tragedy. Barbarin highlighted the risks of navigation in the channel without swimming skills or safety equipment. This year, at least 30 migrants have perished or gone missing attempting the perilous crossing to the UK, according to the International Organisation for Migration.
Rescuers managed to save 65 people from the channel after a search operation lasting over four hours. However, 12 individuals succumbed to their injuries, and another 12 were hospitalized, with two in critical condition. The incident reinforces the urgent need to address the dangerous human smuggling trade and enhance border security.
