A 47-year-old woman was apprehended on Tuesday for allegedly trying to smuggle ganja into Viyyur Central Jail, where her son is detained, an official disclosed.

Latha, a resident of Panniyode in Thiruvananthapuram, was intercepted by the Excise team carrying 80 grams of ganja concealed in her handbag.

According to an Excise official, Latha's son, Harikrishnan, is presently detained at the jail under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. Authorities received a tip-off regarding her intentions to smuggle the substance during a visit.

Upon her arrival, the Excise team conducted a thorough search and discovered the illegal substance hidden in her handbag.

Latha was subsequently arrested and later released on station bail. She admitted during interrogation that this was not her first attempt, having smuggled ganja into the jail on two previous occasions.
