In a significant move, Odisha's new excise policy, slated to take effect on September 1, will allow musical performances in licensed liquor shops while prohibiting dance shows, according to an official release.

The policy details underscore that licensed 'ON' shops may host musical performances or orchestras after obtaining the necessary permissions under Odisha Excise Rules, 2017. However, no dance performances will be permitted in these venues. The policy will also not sanction new IMFL 'OFF' shops during the 2024-25 fiscal year.

Aimed at curbing illegal liquor trade and raising public awareness about alcohol, the policy will see no new 'ON' shop licenses granted in rural areas for the year 2024-25, except for three-star hotels and beer parlours. Additionally, the government has set up a special fund to create awareness against drug addiction and provisions for new recruitment, staff training, and the establishment of anti-smuggling centers.
