In a significant development, General Major Valery Muminjanov, the deputy commander of Russia's Leningrad military district, has been detained on allegations of accepting a substantial bribe, Russia's investigative committee confirmed on Monday.
Muminjanov is accused of facilitating contracts for various companies to supply military clothing, allegedly in exchange for 20 million roubles ($224,000), according to the committee's statement. The investigation is part of a broader anti-corruption drive within the Defence Ministry.
This arrest follows a series of criminal probes targeting senior defence officials, initiated after Andrei Belousov took over from Sergei Shoigu as the Defence Ministry head in May. Reuters has not been able to reach Muminjanov's legal team for comment, and his plea remains undisclosed. The current exchange rate stands at $1 to 89.3000 roubles.
