The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Kolkata Police commissioner over allegations of excessive and brutal force used against protesters on August 27. Demonstrators were demanding justice for a rape-murder victim at RG Kar Medical College.
The NHRC has requested an action-taken report from the police commissioner within two weeks. This notice came after a complaint by O P Vyas from the Bharatiya Human Rights Initiative (BHIM), claiming the police's actions violated the right to peaceful assembly.
The complaint alleges that over 200 students were arrested and subjected to physical assaults, sustaining serious injuries. The NHRC has termed these allegations serious, noting they could indicate a severe violation of human rights and dignity.
