Bombay HC Directs Civic Authorities to Enforce Temporary Ban at Deonar Abattoir for Jain Festival

Following a directive by the Bombay High Court, the BMC has ordered the Deonar abattoir to remain closed on September 4 and 7, coinciding with Jain community's 'Paryushan Parv' and Ganesh Chaturthi. The decision aligns with Jain beliefs of 'ahimsa' and follows a plea from the Sheth Motishaw Lalbaug Jain Charities seeking a temporary ban on animal slaughter and sale of meat.

Acting on a directive from the Bombay High Court, the civic chief of Mumbai issued an order on Friday, mandating the closure of the Deonar abattoir on September 4 and 7, in observance of the Jain community's 'Paryushan Parv' and Ganesh Chaturthi.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) commissioner-cum-administrator, Bhushan Gagrani, stated that the abattoir would remain shut on the specified dates. According to the order, this year, 'Paryushan Parv' falls on September 4, and Ganesh Chaturthi, which has been a mandated closure day since 2015, coincides with September 7.

The directive follows a Bombay High Court ruling instructing Maharashtra's civic bodies to consider a petition by the Sheth Motishaw Lalbaug Jain Charities. The trust sought a temporary ban on animal slaughter and meat sales for 'Paryushan Parv', emphasizing Jain beliefs in non-violence.
