A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to alleged conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar in a bribery case concerning the AIADMK's 'two leaves' election symbol. The court noted that he had undergone detention for a period exceeding the maximum jail term for the offence he was accused of committing.

Special Judge Vishal Gogne provided him relief on a personal bond of Rs 5 lakh. Chandrasekhar is accused of acting as a middleman for AIADMK leader T T V Dinakaran, attempting to bribe an Election Commission official to secure the party's symbol for faction leader V K Sasikala.

Despite securing bail, Chandrasekhar will remain in jail due to other pending cases. The judge highlighted that Chandrasekhar's detention beyond seven years necessitates his mandatory release, emphasizing the judicial interpretation of law as a safeguard against a police state. The prosecution opposed the bail citing the severity of allegations and attributed delays to the accused's legal challenges.
