Search for Missing Tourist in Kuala Lumpur's Sinkhole Continues Amid Safety Concerns

The search for Indian tourist Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, who fell into a sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur, has extended into its seventh day. Rescuers are confronted with strong undercurrents and instability caused by a second sinkhole emerging nearby.

Gali, 48, was walking in the Dang Wangi area when the pavement gave way on August 23, plunging her into an 8-meter-deep sinkhole. So far, only her slippers have been found. Rescue efforts include using high-pressure water jets, excavators, tracker dogs, remote cameras, and ground-penetrating radars.

Nor Hisham Mohammad, deputy director of the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, confirmed the search would continue. While scuba divers were deployed early Thursday, unsafe conditions forced their withdrawal. Authorities noted a similar incident occurred last year at the same location. A task force has been formed to inspect areas and assess safety, while some roads have been closed as a precaution.
