The Assam government plans to file a case against the chancellor of a private university in Meghalaya for allegedly obtaining an OBC certificate fraudulently from the state's Karimganj district 32 years ago, according to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The chancellor, Mahbabul Haque of the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), obtained the certificate in 1992 but had it canceled in 1996 after it was found he was not eligible for it, Sarma mentioned on Wednesday.
The district commissioner at the time failed to initiate proceedings against him, but the government intends to file an FIR against Haque now. This comes after Sarma accused USTM of contributing to significant waterlogging issues in Guwahati due to damage on hills near the campus.
