Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday strongly criticized the Uttar Pradesh government after the bodies of two Dalit teenage girls were discovered hanging from a tree in Fatehgarh. Gandhi raised questions about justice for marginalized groups, including Dalits, the poor, and women.
The two girls, aged 18 and 15, left their homes on Monday night to visit a nearby temple for Janmashtami and did not return, the police reported. Their bodies were found hanging in a mango orchard near their village on Tuesday. The police suspect it to be a case of double suicide, but investigations are ongoing.
In a post shared on X, Priyanka Gandhi questioned why the administration was hastening the cremation process and pointed to a pattern of mistreatment towards Dalits in other regions like Hathras and Unnao. The incident has sparked widespread criticism from political figures, including SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav, who urged for an impartial investigation and prioritization of women's safety above party politics.
