Two individuals attempted self-immolation during a protest against the construction of a waste management centre, police reported Wednesday.

The event occurred Tuesday evening near the Kasna culvert, with the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority overseeing the project.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone III) Ashok Kumar Singh identified the protesters as Akshit Sharma from Milak Lachchhi village and Himanshu Vashisht from Kakod in Bulandshahr district. Despite officials' efforts to reason with them, the protesters escalated the situation.

Sharma and Vashisht doused themselves in kerosene, but timely intervention by Beta-II police station officers averted the crisis, Singh noted. ''Neither of them owns land at the site or lives nearby,'' he added.

An FIR was filed against the protesters on various charges, including obstructing government work.
