Iceland Calls Off Search for Missing in Glacier Incident

Icelandic police have called off the search for missing persons originally believed to be trapped under a glacier. A misunderstanding led authorities to think two tourists were missing after an ice cave collapse killed one person and injured another. The incident occurred in Breidamerkurjokull, part of the Vatnajokull glacier.

Police in Iceland have ended their search for missing persons under a glacier on Monday after earlier reports of two trapped tourists were deemed incorrect.

Authorities confirmed that one person was killed and another injured on Sunday when a natural ice cave collapsed as tourists were exploring it. Initial fears that two more people were trapped were based on a misunderstanding. The group was initially reported to consist of 25 people, but later it was confirmed that only 23 had participated.

The intensive search began on Sunday and continued into Monday but was ultimately called off. The nationalities of the involved individuals have not been disclosed yet. The incident took place at Breidamerkurjokull in southern Iceland, a part of the Vatnajokull glacier, which is the largest glacier in Western Europe.
