In a pressing call for accountability, AAP demanded the immediate resignation of Lt Governor VK Saxena on Monday. The party accuses Saxena of greenlighting the controversial felling of 1,100 trees in Delhi's Ridge area.
Addressing the media, Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj cited an affidavit from the project's contractor which indicated that the permission to fell the trees had been sanctioned by the lieutenant governor. According to Bharadwaj, the affidavit received from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) confirmed this claim, bringing the lieutenant governor's actions under scrutiny.
The Supreme Court has also taken cognizance of the issue, initiating contempt proceedings against the DDA vice-chairman. Meanwhile, AAP leader Sanjay Singh accused the BJP and the lieutenant governor of destroying Delhi's greenery for a road-widening project, alleging ulterior motives to protect nearby farmhouses.
